David has been an active investor and executive in publishing, communications, software, online services, organic and sustainable agriculture and resort development. Most recently David has focused on renewable energy initiatives as lead investor in Brazil Renewable Energy Company (BRENCO, now a part of ETH Bioenergia), a founder of Hawaii BioEnergy, LLC and investor and advisor to Solazyme, Inc.
David's philanthropic interests include habitat conservation, public education and medical research. He is the former chairman of the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii and a former national director of The Nature Conservancy, the World Wildlife Fund, PBS and the Sesame Workshop.
Raised in Kailua, Hawaii, David earned a BA degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1976 and an honorary doctorate in 2005. He and his wife Maggie have four children and reside in upcountry Maui.
