September 12, 2021

On September 17th and 18th, 2016, brave participants fighting to end brain cancer will rappel and go Over the Edge for Brain Cancer (@OTE4BrainCancer). In its inaugural year, @OTE4BrainCancer has received an overwhelming response from the local community.  Forty participants, known as “edgers”, will raise $80,000 for ABC² (Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure).

The two-day event leaps into action on Saturday (September 17th) as this impressive list of courageous VIPs join the fight against brain cancer and rappel down the Hyatt Regency Crystal City. They include:
•    Nitin Ramachandran, Herndon, VA: teenage brain tumor survivor, Washington Wizards teammate
•    Jake Turner, Frederick, MD: teenage brain tumor survivor, baseball player
•    BethAnn Telford, Fairfax, VA: brain tumor survivor, endurance athlete, 2017 World Marathon Challenge Competitor
•    Julie Frank, Gaithersburg, MD: brain tumor survivor, cancer researcher
•    Max Wallace, CEO of ABC²

“Brain cancer is one of the most challenging and underfunded diseases,” said Max Wallace, CEO of ABC².  “Sometimes it takes extreme measures to make extreme impact.  Supporters of Over the Edge for Brain Cancer are real life superheroes with courage and determination to help save the lives of brain cancer patients.”

On day two (September 18th) participants will show their fearlessness as they make their rappel. Spectators and supporters are invited to gather on the terrace of the Hyatt Regency Crystal City to cheer on participants while enjoying high-energy entertainment and partaking in fun, food and fitness opportunities available on site.

Confirmed sponsors and partners for this year’s @OTE4BrainCancer include The Hyatt Regency Crystal City, The Case Foundation, Earth Treks, Maserati, 94.7 Fresh FM, Genentech and Over The Edge.

Over the Edge for Brain Cancer is a unique and exciting opportunity in which participants or “edgers” rappel down the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, an 18-story building with breathtaking views of the nation’s capital. Edgers raise a minimum of $2,000 to participate and have 30 days after the rappel to fundraise.  All event proceeds benefit brain cancer research.

Brain cancer is:
• the second leading cause of cancer deaths among children and young adults.
• extremely heterogeneous, with 120 different types of tumors, all of which have unknown causes.
• not as rare as you might think. Today there are more than 600,000 people in the US living with a brain tumor diagnosis and another 66,000 new diagnosis are expected this year.
