Dan Case revolutionized Silicon Valley by taking smart risks, going where others wouldn't go and always being true to himself and everyone he met. In the peak of his career Dan lost his life to brain cancer.

When faced with a terminal diagnosis, Dan didn't slow down - he worked harder. Dan, along with his wife Stacey, his brother Steve, and Steve's wife Jean, founded ABC² (Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure) to bring a venture approach to brain cancer research and treatment.

Every day, Dan inspires us. Throughout his fight with brain cancer, Dan remained determined. He was never afraid of finding new approaches or taking risks, and neither are we. We are relentless in our search for the critical brain cancer breakthroughs that will lead to cures.

The Challenges We Face

Dan faced firsthand the dire state of brain cancer research. Because brain cancer is not as prevalent as other types, few biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies have been willing to invest research and development dollars.

While basic scientific discoveries tell us more about cancer with each passing year, more than 90% of research stops at the financial “Valley of Death,” never to be translated from knowledge into new therapies for patients.

Drug discovery and development can take 10 to 15 years. When ABC² backed Genentech to get Avastin approved by the FDA for glioblastoma, it became the first new brain cancer drug approved since 1999.

Meanwhile, the median life expectancy of someone with glioblastoma is only about 18 months. Today in the US, 42 men, women and children lost their lives to brain cancer. It happened yesterday, and unless things change, it will happen again tomorrow.

We can not, and will not, sit by and watch brain cancer research crawl along at this rate.

Our Unconventional Approach

We're expanding the search for the cure by looking beyond a single field of research. New treatments need to be found, but an isolated scientist can only get so far; we need to drastically shift the attitudes and approaches to brain cancer research.

ABC² breaks through the boundaries of academia, nonprofits, industries and other research fields to find the cure. To reach new treatments faster, we're helping our partners connect, learning from our failures and sharing one another's successes.

As venture philanthropists, we “buy down the risk” for researchers to connect with the companies that can develop new patient treatments. We have to push more research through that drug development “Valley of Death” before we can start learning from results — from successes and failures.

By challenging long-held attitudes about brain cancer research, we’re charting a more direct course towards the cure.
