Each of the 40 Race Towards A Cure – Marine Corps Marathon(MCM) runners have worked hard over the last few months to raise funds and awareness to find a cure for brain cancer, all while training to run a marathon or a 10K. One such runner is James Nellis, the captain of Team Cure.
James Nellis is the type of person who we love to have on our team at Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure! He shares our sense of urgency, passion and determination about a finding a cure for brain cancer.
For years, James talked about running the Marine Corps Marathon. But when his mother, Vicki Nellis, was diagnosed with brain cancer, he turned talk into action. James registered for the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon on behalf of Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure. "By running the Marine Corps Marathon, I could honor my mother and raise funds so others could benefit from more research and better treatments," said James. "When Vicki was diagnosed, I discovered that there was a huge void with organizations that focus specifically on brain cancer. That's why we chose Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure."
Training for the marathon was a positive way for James to share his mother's story and bring a message of hope. Colleagues at The Nellis Group, the family real estate business founded by Vicki, were inspired by his enthusiasm. His friend Michael Rogers wanted to get involved because he lost his mother Terri to the same disease. Together, with Thomas Ferri, a high-school classmate, they formed Team Cure. On October 31, 2010, the 14 members of Team Cure finished the Marine Corps Marathon and raised over $30,000 for research! Vicki was able to celebrate with the team, but sadly lost her battle with brain cancer in December 2010.
This year, Team Cure is all the more determined to make a difference. They created a new team logo that honors Vicki and Terri. Team Cure has grown to 25 runners and their goal is to raise $50,000.
Whether it's a real estate transaction, a marathon or a cause that is dear to him, James puts his whole mind, body and soul into the effort. As he states on the Team Cure website, "Together, we sacrifice with training and money so that others may live."
Thanks to James and Team Cure, Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure has been able to expand its Marine Corps Marathon involvement this year to include more teams and individual runners. We encourage you to cheer on our entire Race Towards A Cure crew! Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure is hosting a pre-race cook-out on Saturday, October 29 in Arlington, VA. And of course, you can join us at the ABC2 Cheering Stations along the route on Sunday, October 30th. Bring colorful signs and be on the lookout for our bright orange Race Towards A Cure shirts!
